Easy steps for a sustainable celebration:
- Savor the local harvest. Check with local farmers as well as fall festivals and natural markets for produce grown in the area. Squash, pumpkins, root vegetables, onions, even brussel sprouts are perfect for holiday celebrations.
- Search out heritage breed turkeys at natural markets, local farms or online. Rich and flavorful heritage birds are raised naturally and help preserve the genetic diversity of the species.
- Set the table with organic cloth napkins and "found" items like fall leaves, pinecones or dried flowers, or "recycle" fun brass or glass candlesticks from your local thrift store.
- Spend some quality time in the kitchen. Home cooking may be the most delicious way to eliminate wasteful packaging and ensure that your meal is made from sustainable ingredients. This month’s recipe Eggnog Swirl Pumpkin Cheesecake, raises the bar on organic scrumptiousness. Or try Thanksgiving classics including Squash & Sweet Potato Gratin, Yams with Nutmeg and Sage
or Cranberry Pie with Walnut Pastry. Mmmm!
