The Search Box is Your New Front Page

I am surprised to still hear media executives treat search engines and weblogs as threats. In this new, open world of the internet, it's much wiser to treat them as opportunities. For today, if your brand and content cannot be found via search and links, then you're lost. You're nowhere.

That lesson has been driven home for me by working with About.com, which is amazing at search-engine optimization, as you know. You search on any of thousands of topics, and you can bet that an About.com GuideSite is likely to be one of the first choices.

About.com's home page highlights the depth and breadth of content we offer to our visitors, and offers high-quality impressions for our advertisers. Over the past month, we have been in the process of updating our homepage with brand new design and content that places the breadth and variety of About.com in a new and visually pleasing atmosphere that will enhance traffic flow.

Our new home page features more user-friendly content such as video highlights and image galleries. Not only does it allow more personal engagement between About.com's 'Guides' and users, but it also gives the site a dynamic, modern feel that keeps people coming back and enables our advertisers to maximize the full potential of About.com.
