The Hivelogic Newsletter

Welcome to the very first Hivelogic Newsletter. Since I launched the site in 2000, I've always wanted to create a newsletter like this one, as a way to provide updates, details, background information, and occasionally a more personal, behind-the-scenes take on things that might not exactly fit with the direction of the site itself.

As a way to say thanks for subscribing, I'm offering a discount on the new Hivelogic T-shirts to newsletter subscribers (see below). I'll try and come up with additional ways to make it worth your time down the road as well.

A New Direction

Most of you receiving this newsletter have been Hivelogic readers for many years, and I'd really like to thank you for sticking around so long. Though in the past my posting routine has varied from plentiful to occasional, I have always focused on creating high-quality content regardless of the subject. Tightening up the focus of the site and limiting its scope is my way of creating a higher level of quality, and in turn, increasing the frequency of my article writing.

As a result, you'll be seeing fewer links to external sites and more of a concentration on discovering quality, living more efficiently, and leading a simpler, more mindful life. I'm focusing on the things that are important to me now, and letting the rest fall away.

My hope is that Hivelogic will be more beneficial to you as a result.

The New Logo

In 2007, my friend Dan Cederholm created a fantastic logo for Hivelogic which I've used ever since, both on the site and on merchandise and promotional materials.

As much as still I love Dan's logo, I wanted something new to connect with the site's recent changes: I've redesigned again and -- for the first time -- added a bit of color. Behind the scenes, I've switched from my own Ruby on Rails-based CMS to ExpressionEngine. My hope is that the new logo connects with and represents these changes in a positive way.

The new logo (as well as some additional art you'll be seeing soon) was designed by the amazingly talented Nik Holmes.

T-Shirts

Main Content Inline

At long last, I'm ready to announce a new line of Hivelogic T-Shirts, but you're hearing about it here on the Newsletter first, and even better, there's a special discount for subscribers.

These T-shirts haven't been announced on Hivelogic yet -- I've only opened the store for Newsletter subscribers, so don't spill the beans just yet.

It took some work to get the quality where I wanted it to be -- it's tricky when layering multiple colors (there are 5 in total). Layering this many colors is both expensive and tricky to get just right, but I think we've nailed it. You can check them out here. Printed on high-quality American Apparel T-shirts.

For the next week, I'm offering a 5% discount exclusively for newsletter subscribers. When you're checking out, use the coupon code NEWSLETTER and the discount will be applied to the total automatically.

Everything Else

There are a couple of other things I wanted to talk about really quickly.

Podcasting: Many of you have asked me if either The Talk Show (co-starring Gruber) or Tack Sharp (co-starring Duncan) are still alive. The answer is yes! Scheduling issues relating to my recent shift to independence (which has translated into being much busier than ever) combined with my co-hosts' busy lives and careers have just complicated things. It's a priority for us to get the podcasts back on track. Thanks for being patient with us in the meantime.

Screencasting: I've been spending a good bit of time working with Geoffrey Grosenbach at PeepCode, and I'm really excited to announce that my very first PeepCode screencast is out: Meet the Command Line. This screencast is a great way to get started using the command line, and teaches the basic assumptions of UNIX, how to look for help, and how to work with files, directories, and programs. A lot of work went into producing it, and working with Geoffrey has been an awesome experience. I'd love to hear what you think of it.

So until next time, thanks for reading Hivelogic and subscribing to this newsletter. See you online.

Your Internet pal,

Dan
