OfficeMax A Day Made Better Microsite
OfficeMax's A Day Made Better is a one-day event that awards more than 1,100 teachers with over $1,000 in school supplies. In order to bring their stories to life, we created a web experience that allowed OfficeMax employees to immediately post photos from the event. Part of the donated supplies was a digital camcorder, which the teachers have used to post a video story of their big day. A couple of our favorites are Fallston Elementary
and Piper School.
We created an online presence for the cause in 2008, and in 2009 added more functionality, including a page that highlights various celebrities as cause advocates. This year the event took place on October 6th. On that day, the site had 3,420 visits, 25,535 pageviews, 7.47 pages/visit, and 82.08% new visits. With an average of 68 uploads per hour and over 1,300 total uploads, we literally sat staring as the map filled up with dots.
Are you wondering where we got the fancy stats? We use Google Analytics because it provides rich insights into website traffic and marketing effectiveness. If you don't have Google Analytics, or don't have access to your reports, or don't know how to read your reports, let us know! |

Google Analytics
Hi everybody. If you don't know this about me already, I love Google. Love it. Google Docs, Google Calendar, Google Contacts, the Google logos... Today I'm going to give you a little more info on Google Analytics. I know it's not really an exciting design topic, but it is an important and often overlooked aspect of a website. You need to know where users are landing, where they're leaving, how many pages they're viewing per visit, and how many viewers are returning versus how many are new.
When you first log in, you'll see a few terms:
- Visits tells the number of unique sessions initiated by your visitors
- Pageviews tells how many times the pages on your site have been viewed
- Pages/visit tells how many pages, on average, users view when they come to your site
- Bounce Rate tells what percentage of users left after viewing only one page on your site
- Avg. Time on Site shows how long each user spent on your site
- % New Visits shows what percentage of your users have not visited your site before
You'll also see an overview of your site's visitors, traffic sources, and content. You can tell which sites are referring people to your site, which countries they're coming from, which browsers they're using, what kind of coffee they're drinking...
You can certainly leave the monitoring part to us, but if you don't have a Google Analytics account we've put together a tutorial to help you get one set up.
For more information, check out Google's Getting Started Guide or drop us an email. If you're really curious about the difference between clicks, visits, visitors, pageviews, and unique pageviews, click here. |
